Coach's Weeks 7-10 Recovery Side Quest Review

THE ROAD BACK TO THE FORGE

    Weeks 7–10 | The Recovery Side-Quest

Not every battle moves you forward. Some teach you how to keep going.

WHEN THE PLAN HAS TO CHANGE

Resurgam was built around forward momentum. Train, recover, adapt, repeat. Each week was supposed to bring another step toward the Spartan Trifecta, another opportunity to build strength, and another piece of evidence that the system was working.

Then the back flare-up happened. The pain was severe enough to bring training to a complete standstill. The plan didn’t simply need a few adjustments. For the first part of this stretch, movement itself became difficult, and the usual training routine had to take a back seat. There is no point pretending otherwise. Weeks 7–10 did not go according to plan.

But a setback is not an invitation to make a bad situation worse. When the body demands a change in direction, the objective shifts. Progress is no longer measured by how much weight gets lifted or how many miles get logged. Sometimes, the priority is simply giving yourself the opportunity to move forward again.

    THE INVISIBLE WORK

The first few weeks offered very little opportunity for physical activity. The focus turned toward what could still be maintained, particularly nutrition, while waiting for movement to become more manageable.

By Weeks 8–10, regular walking began to return. It wasn’t the training volume Resurgam had planned. It wasn’t the progression we wanted. But it was a way to begin rebuilding consistency without pretending the last several weeks hadn’t happened. This is where the less glamorous side of the system matters.

Nutrition still counts when the gym is off the table. Walking still counts when running isn’t part of the picture. And recognizing when the original plan is no longer appropriate is part of the work, too. There is no bonus for rushing recovery. There is no virtue in turning one setback into a longer one because the calendar says it’s time to train.

    THE LESSON BEHIND THE SETBACK

Resurgam is about building a stronger, more capable version of Joshua. That mission has never been limited to a number on the scale, a lifting milestone, or a race result. It is also about building a system that can survive real life.

The L5/S1 issue is not something we can simply ignore when motivation returns. It has to remain part of the decision-making process, influencing exercise selection, progression, recovery, and the way we respond when symptoms change.

Being cleared to resume full training is an important step forward. It does not mean every symptom has vanished, and it does not mean we pretend the flare-up never happened. There is still some residual discomfort. That matters.

Block 2 cannot be built around making up for lost time. We will not cram missed sessions into the weeks ahead or treat the recovery period as a debt that must be repaid. We start from where we are now, not where we wish we had been. The objective remains the same: build strength, develop endurance, prepare for the Spartan Trifecta, and finish this campaign more capable than when it began.

    BACK TO THE FORGE

Week 11 marks the beginning of Block 2.

The recovery side-quest is ending, and structured training is back on the table. There is work to do, ground to cover, and a long-term objective still waiting at the end of the road. Block 2 begins at Week 11. We move forward from here, one deliberate step at a time.

    Week 11 - Mini Quests & V-Quest

“The Block 2/Cycle B Launch” Stack

    1. The 360° Baseline Audit (5 XP)

    • Target: Record a complete 360-degree video wearing the strictly locked baseline standard: white briefs, above-ankle white socks, and the Garmin device on the wrist.
    • Success Condition: The video must be captured in clear lighting with no hiding behind angles or poses, and uploaded to the public Resurgam Hub.
    • Purpose: Force a real-time confrontation with documented body dysmorphia and establish an unvarnished visual baseline for the start of the Cycle B rebuild.

    2. 10 PM Digital Sunset (3 XP)

    • Target: Enforce a strict 10:00 p.m. shutdown of all screens, gaming devices, and lights every night this week.
    • Success Condition: Successfully power down by 10:00 p.m. for all seven nights to secure a wider recovery window before the mandatory 4:45 a.m. daily wake-up.
    • Purpose: Directly attack the historical sub-6-hour sleep deficit and proactively cut off the late-night idle time that historically triggers emotional snacking.

    3. Cycle B Consistency Bonus (2 XP)

    • Target: Complete at least 10 out of the 12 scheduled training sessions (Push, Pull, Core, OCR, and volume-capped Cardio) for Week 11.
    • Success Condition: Execute and log 10 or more of the prescribed Cycle B routines in Hevy and Garmin.
    • Purpose: Build immediate momentum in the new Cycle B architecture and reward the habit of showing up consistently without demanding maximum intensity or heavy axial loads.

    V-Quest

    1. The Friction of the Freeze (5 XP)

    • Target: Record a direct-to-camera video or audio log addressing the clinical reality of the past month.
    • Success Condition: Speak about the acute L5/S1 pain flare, the radiating left leg neuropathy, and the mental frustration of having to hard-stop your physical momentum.
    • Purpose: Process the emotional weight and the historical “all-or-nothing” trap of the setback out loud, clearing the mental slate so you can fully commit to the Cycle B rebuild without lingering friction
